“August 7, 2017, JUNEAU — Due to poor ocean survival conditions for Chinook (king) salmon, which are persisting in Southeast Alaska and British Columbia, extreme management measures are necessary to restrict harvests in coast wide fisheries that are directed at stocks originating in Southeast Alaska, Northern British Columbia, the Fraser River, and the Washington Coast. Inseason information from ADF&G, the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and NOAA surveys off the coast of Oregon, Washington, and the Gulf of Alaska all indicate that poor production conditions are currently occurring and will persist through at least 2018. Large Whale Entanglement Response Q&A in Petersburg
Ed Lyman, Large Whale Entanglement Response Coordinator at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, will be in Petersburg this week to train and answer questions on disentangling humpback whales. The Petersburg Marine Mammal Center (PMMC) is hosting a Q&A session with Ed this Friday, June 30th at 7 p.m. in the Borough Assembly Chambers. PMMC recognizes that this is the busy summer fishing season, however it is a challenge to get Ed from Hawaii to Alaska. Hopefully in the future his schedule will allow for better timing
Drive Down Dock closures
This year the harbor department will allow the tour ship American Spirit to moor at the face of the Drive Down Dock on ten different occasions through the summer months. SSRAA Bid for Canoe Pass Test Fishery
SSRAA and ADF&G are participating in a cooperative test fishery at Canoe Pass, located on southern Etolin Island, to establish a baseline survey. This survey is designed to evaluate the presence of non-targeted/bycatch salmon species in Canoe Pass that may occur during the normal run timing of the summer chum salmon stock during terminal fisheries. In this cooperative agreement, SSRAA will contract purse seine vessel(s) to conduct baseline fishing using traditional seine gear. The seine activities will be conducted as a one day charter each week over a 5-week period. The contract vessel(s) will be responsible for their own crew and supplies including food, fuel, and net.
